letter_cartoonTis the season................Time to gather with family & friends, rejoice in our blessings, share gifts, food and drink, etc, etc...

It is also a really good time to touch base with your local Member of Parliament, Member of the Provincial Legislature and Municipal or County Councilor.

Send a festive card with greetings, thanks, update on activities and request for continued support in the forthcoming year.

We are told that cuts are coming from all levels of government in the 2012/13 fiscal year. Museums are vital parts of communities and are active in every national and provincial constituency and many municipalities in Nova Scotia. Most museums operate under significant financial constraint and the potential cuts are a real threat to the viability of their future operations.

Now is a really good time to remind politicians of the good work you do in your community and how vital museums are to the quality of life and economic strength of Nova Scotian villages, towns and cities. It is also smart for many voices from many institutions to bring forward a single simple message – Museums are important to Nova Scotians, please support your local museum.

Below is an example of how your museum might approach a letter. We are not recommending a form letter or electronic mail outs. Keep your letter to one page and your points concise. We are also attaching a document with tips on lobbying politicians with links to help you contact the right individuals in the right way.

This communication is about your organization's relationship with an individual in a position to substantively support your future. Taking the time to make the contact personal can really make a difference.

We'd really love to know if your organisation sends out a festive greeting – a copy of your letter would be most welcome.

Good luck!
