We are very pleased to acknowledge the funding support of the Museums Assistance Program from the Department of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. ANSM recently received the news that its application for funding for the Advisory Service and Museums Studies Program, Pilot Year One was successful. Both the Advisory Service and the Museum Studies Program provide vital grassroots professional support and training for museum workers in Nova Scotia. Recognition by the Federal government, in partnership with the Provincial government, of the important work undertaken by museums in Nova Scotia and the need for training and service that improves the professional knowledge and capacity of museums for their future sustainability is an important endorsement. This funding support provides ANSM with the means to offer quality education and service at a subsidised rate for its members. Our thanks to Minister James Moore and staff at Canadian Heritage.
ANSM has recently joined the Federation of Community Organizations (FOCO), an umbrella group established in 2006 to build closer links and provide support for non-profit community organizations. FOCO’s original mandate to provide links between voluntary organizations in HRM has now been broadened to a provincial scope. FOCO provides training opportunities on human resource and related subjects at little or no cost and is looking into the potential to provide such training online. Click here to learn more about FOCO. ANSM Managing Director, Anita Price, recently participated in a FOCO sponsored introductory session on Social Enterprise and non-profits in Nova Scotia. Check out the next edition of the Beacon for more information on Social Enterprise. QR Code “How to” Guide for Museums The QR code “How to” guide prepared as part of the ANSM pilot project undertaken for the Canadian Heritage Information Network in 2010/11 is at long last available on the CHIN website. The guide provides practical information on the steps required for museums to use QR codes in their interpretation and marketing activities. ANSM’s next project with CHIN is a practical guide for museums in setting up a WiFi system at their sites. Without WiFi, visitors using their own phones and usage plans to access information linked through the QR codes can experience high "roaming" charges. WiFi at public organisations, such as libraries and museums, provides the public with the capacity to access the internet at the sites using their own equipment (smartphone, ipod, ipad...) but without incurring extra costs. This project will be undertaken over the winter months and the guide will be available late spring/early summer 2012. Call For Your EventsNova Scotian museums are brimming with creative events.
