Museums and Genealogy: A Natural Union --Del Muise
My Carleton University colleague (Leighann Neilson of the Sprott School of Management) and I are undertaking an on-line survey of Canadian genealogists. It is a Canadian survey supported by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council and hosted on a secure server at Carleton University. The launch of the survey in Nova Scotia at the end of July has propelled its first two weeks of activity. With over 1250 completed surveys to date, we now are approaching a national representation, which is yielding tremendously interesting data; though at the moment we are only able to look at the results in a very preliminary way. The survey will stay live until sometime in November.
To some large extent the early success was a consequence of the collaboration of the many museums and associated archives to whom we managed to send information about the survey. We started with a telephone canvas at the end of July and followed up with information brochures and then a tour to discuss how genealogy is being undertaken at various locations. We managed to call in on over two dozen institutions, all the way from Bay St Lawrence to Yarmouth, and the few that we missed we hope to get to before fall closures. We want to take this opportunity thank the many staff people at those institutions who were so helpful to us in our canvas. The sense of excitement we encountered at so many of those museums is a testament to the health of local museums in the province. You can follow our progress during that week from the 6th through the 14th of August on our blog, where we are also discussing some of the preliminary findings of the survey. It is available at: http://genealogyincanada.blogspot.com/?zx=725ebe2a4cbd3126
The survey is designed to gauge how new media and social media are impacting the practice of genealogy. It also looks at the who, when, what, where and why, as well as the how of genealogy today, including the impact of roots tourism on local museums. It is an on-line survey that can be undertaken by anyone with an interest in genealogy or family history. Those interested can take the survey at:http://www.cusurveycentre.ca/gensurvey/. Please feel free to take the survey and to suggest it to your clients and members. The more we have from Nova Scotia the better it is for the national survey. We hope to share the results of the survey with all those who helped us along the way sometime in the new year, once we have had a chance to fully assess the data; but there are already some interesting insights that we are reporting on our research blog.
Del Muise is Emeritus Professor of History (Carleton U) and retired in Margaree where he is involved with local heritage. He is also Cape Breton representative on the ANSM Board, where he also serves as Vice President.
IT Equipment Purchase Program ANSM is continuing its IT equipment purchase program this fall with the goal of providing cost savings and procurement efficiencies for IT and technology-related equipment for its member museums. The equipment is specifically chosen for small/mid size museum use – good quality for price, ease of use, robust capacity. The following types of equipment can be sourced through this program: 1. PCs & Laptops 2. Scanners 3. Voice recorders 4. Accessories & support equipment Need to purchase new equipment in the near future? Keep the program in mind and stay tuned for more details coming soon or give ANSM a call at 902 423-4677. Call For Your Ongoing Events
