Museum Advisor Travels

The summer season has arrived in earnest and Museums Advisor, Karin Kierstead, has begun her travels around the province visiting museums participating in the advisory service (formerly Passage Project). This year’s visits have a special focus working with museum staff to ensure they are up to speed and comfortable using the new collections management database system. In preparation for using the new collections management system, data must be prepared and migrated from the old system. This is a large undertaking and requires a fine alignment of several phases: data transfer from participating museum – data cleaning and forwarding to software developer – data migration to new system – new system access for museum – training & use. This involves 300,000+/- records and 50+ museums across  Nova Scotia. Fortunately, Karin is just the person to tackle the challenge.

Reviews from museums using the new system have been very positive so far. The new system is more intuitive to use, has much better search and report capacities and includes features such as user level control. The Information Management & Access Committee (IMAC) determined that those in greatest need (which translates as old system failure) receive first attention as the fairest way to proceed. It’s onwards and upwards from here….it’s just going to take a little time.

Welcoming Sarah – New Administrative Assistant

This week, Sarah Gignac joined the small but mighty staff of ANSM. Sarah will be filling the new Administrative Assistant position and brings a strong set of skills to the job. Her duties are primarily focused on general administrative tasks with some website, e-newsletter preparation and editing thrown in the mix to keep things interesting.

Sarah is originally from Victoria, British Columbia but has made the move to Nova Scotia and plans to make it her home. She has a background in writing/editing, data entry, general administration, project management and more. Sarah has also recently become a certified yoga instructor and will be teaching classes in the Halifax area. Click here for a brief bio of Sarah.

Sarah is looking forward to working with ANSM members and learning lots about Nova Scotia’s museums.

Welcome Sarah!

Condolences to the family of Robert Morgan on the passing of a loved historian, author, archivist, teacher and community leader. You can see a great interview he did with The Heritage Cape Breton Connection onThe Beaton Institute website.

CHIN has extended its deadline for applications for Young Canada Works Internship Program. Internships begin in Fall 2011 and present a great opportunity for museums in Nova Scotia to tackle a beefy project on their “to do” list. Check the grant criteria to see how the program may for you. Applications can be made online until July 13, 2011.

The Mary E. Black Gallery in Halifax has an exciting new exhibit called “Inspired.” Artists were asked to create a new work of art based on an artifact selected from a Nova Scotia museum or heritage site. Look for works inspired by pieces from DesBrisay Museum, Ross Farm, and Pier 21, just to name a few. Exhibit runs until July 24, 2011. For more information, check out the NSCCD website.
